Uruguay vs Paraguay Match Preview

Uruguay or Paraguay will be crowned champions of South America on Sunday.

Who gets to win the 2011 Copa America title? Uruguay might be tagged as favorites to do so but Paraguay’s chances to lift the trophy are well alive too. However, the combination of Luis Suarez, Diego Forlan and Muslera gives La Celeste Olimpica stronger muscles to succeed at both ends of the pitch.

In the quarter-finals of the Copa America, Muslera exhibited his goalkeeping skills as Argentina suffered the damage. In the semi-finals, it was Luis Suarez’s time to remind the public that Uruguay have the potential to score. What will happen in the final of the 2011 Copa America for 14-time CONMEBOL champions Uruguay?

The Paraguayans cannot boast of having as many titles as the Uruguayans in their trophy room but pedigree and history sometimes has nothing to do with current issues.

Now there’s something interesting and ironic about Paraguay’s success in reaching the final of the 2011 Copa America. A quick trip back into the recent years can reveal it. Teams that beat Brazil in the quarter-finals of a major tournament get to reach its final.

Take a look at France’s feat against the Seleçao at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Take another look at the Netherlands’ upset of the Brazilians at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. And this year, Paraguay have ousted Brazil in the quarter-final as well and they’ve reached the final of the Copa America too.

It’s as if beating Brazil in the quarter-finals of a competition was the confirmation of making it into the final. Curiously, there seems to be bad luck in this strange formula. France and the Netherlands did reach the final but they lost it too.

Will Paraguay suffer the same fate on Sunday?
