MATCH PREVIEW
In 1811, Paraguay achieved independence from their Spanish rulers. 199 years on and the plucky Paraguayans will again have to overthrow Spain, who are very much a footballing world superpower. Gerardo Martino's South American side are entering new territory by reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup, but have their work cut out against a Spanish team that are ominously moving through the gears. However, they haven't earned a reputation as the World Cup's biggest chokers for nothing - 1950 is the only time they have made the semi-finals.

Much was made of Paraguay's striking options before the World Cup, but not one of their forwards have managed to find the net so far. They were deprived of their main goal threat, Salvador Cabanas, after he was shot in the head in January. His agent revealed he has been watching the action from his hospital bed near Buenos Aries and his regular contact with the squad has been a source of inspiration to their players in South Africa.

It's not just Paraguay's frontmen that have struggled for goals. Spain's Fernando Torres has seemingly been affected by the curse that has afflicted Premier League strikers at this World Cup. A host of big-name forwards who ply their trade in England, have failed to fire in South Africa and Torres has looked completely out of sorts. Fortunately, Spain can fall back on the form of David Villa, who has proven to be a one-man scoring machine and looks a great bet to win the Golden Boot.

But while Villa has been grabbing the headlines, plaudits have started to pour in for a backline that has conceded just 11 goals in 19 competitive matches under Vicente del Bosque. Their solidity, added to a disciplinary record that has seen only Xabi Alonso booked so far, has helped Spain recover from the shock defeat by Switzerland in their opening game.

MATCH PREVIEW
It could be tempting fate, but Saturday's match in Cape Town has all the ingredients to be a World Cup classic - two attack-minded sides, a plethora of star names and bucket loads of needle. With 19 goals between them, both sides have gone for the jugular in South Africa. That was certainly the case when the teams met in the quarter-finals four years ago, when Germany's penalty shoot-out win was followed by a mass brawl which earned two Argentine players Fifa bans.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has this week reopened those old wounds: "The behaviour of the Argentines on the pitch, how they gesticulate and how they try to influence the referee, is disrespectful". Captain Philipp Lahm went further, saying "they are impulsive, temperamental and they don't know how to lose."

For once, Diego Maradona refused to take the bait, dismissing Schweinsteiger's comments as symptomatic of nerves, but the coach admits Argentina will be looking for revenge on Saturday.

Lionel Messi was only an unused substitute in 2006, but will play a key role in Cape Town. Messi was many people's tip as player of the tournament but, by his own very high standards, has yet to hit top gear. Instead Germany's Mesut Ozil has arguably been the outstanding player in South Africa.

MATCH PREVIEW
This quarter-final brings together a former football superpower hoping to recapture past glories and an emerging nation looking to write their place in World Cup history. Victory for Uruguay would take them through to their first semi-final since 1970, while Ghana can become the first African side to reach the last four.

Uruguay's two World Cup wins, in 1930 and 1950, came before Ghana had even gained independence from Great Britain. That level of success was always likely to prove short-lived for a country of just 3.5m people, but this tournament has presented the Uruguayans with a golden chance to re-establish themselves on the global stage.

Victory against the USA made Ghana only the third African side to reach the last eight of a World Cup. If the Black Stars are to succeed where Cameroon and Senegal failed, they will have to cope without a number of players who will miss this game due to injury or suspension.

Head-to-head
- This will be the first full international between the two teams. The Ghanaian side that won the Fifa Under-20 World Cup last year drew 2-2 with Uruguay in the group stage.
